Apache Cassandra and Spark. You got the lighter, let’s spark the fire.

Apache Cassandra has proven to be one of the best solutions for storing and retrieving time series data at high velocity and high volume. This talk will give you an overview of the many ways you can be successful by introducing Apache Cassandra concepts. We will discuss how the storage model of Cassandra is well suited for this pattern and go over examples of how best to build data models. There will also be examples of how you can use Apache Spark along with Apache Cassandra to create a real time data analytics platform. It’s so easy, you will be shocked and ready to try it yourself.

Testing Cassandra Applications
Cassandra is a fantastic distributed database, but it pushes a lot of complexity back to the application developer. In this talk I will discuss how to test your applications that use Cassandra, starting at the unit test level through to the black box acceptance tests. Most of the talk will be around a new framework, Stubbed Cassandra (http://www.scassandra.org/), that stubs Cassandra so that all failure scenarios can be deterministically reproduced without having to create a multi-node cluster. Depending on audience interest I may go into the native protocol and my experiences implementing the server side of it to develop Stubbed Cassandra.

DataStax Enterprise and Actor Systems for Scalable, Real-time Decision Making
The old paradigm of working with databases meant cramming tons of data into your SQL farm, data warehouse, Hadoop cluster, or whatever and running big expensive batch jobs to drive decisions for your business.

With these traditional approaches you miss a lot of opportunities to react data at pivotal moments, for example:

1. Presenting targeted offers to customers at the point of sale;
2. Making personalized recommendations to users on their first run of your product; or
3. Reacting to changes in sensor data as they happen, rather than days later.

Meet the actor system, a time-tested, proven technology that is a perfect processing companion to Cassandra's massively scalable storage solution. With these two tools working in unison you can capitalize on lost opportunities and build reactive, scalable software. In this talk we'll talk about using actor system frameworks like Akka in concert with DataStax Enterprise.

Advanced Data Modeling Concepts
You know you need Cassandra for it's uptime and scaling, but what about that data model? Let's bridge that gap and get you building your game changing app. We'll break down topics like storing objects and indexing for fast retrieval. You will see by understanding a few things about Cassandra internals, you can put your  data model in the spotlight. The goal of this talk is to get you comfortable working with data in Cassandra throughout the application lifecycle. What are you waiting for?

Cassandra Story at GumGum
GumGum relies on Cassandra heavily for storing image metadata. After using HBase for 4 years, we decided to make the switch. Why did we do that? What problems did we face? How was our migration journey? What were the mistakes we made? What were the choices we made in hosting Cassandra on EC2? This presentation will narrate our exciting journey to Apache Cassandra.
